Electrically Heated Bitumen Tanks

Electrically Heated Bitumen Tanks

Overview

Our Electrically Heated Bitumen Tanks are engineered for safe, efficient storage and temperature maintenance of Bitumen, emulsion and polymer-modified bitumen (PMB). Available in 20–100 m³ capacities, these vertically oriented tanks combine proven mechanical design with reliable electric heating elements, high-performance insulation and an intuitive control system to minimize heat loss, oxidation and maintenance demands — ideal for terminal, plant and contractor operations.

Why Electrically Heated?

  • Precision temperature control — instant automatic activation of heating elements maintains target viscosity for safe pumping and correct blending with thermostatic set values.
  • Efficient heating — No intermediate thermal oil — energy is delivered straight to the product.
  • Low maintenance & long life — no more paraphine residues like thermal-oil systems; simple electrical components and easy access service points.
  • Environmentally friendlier operation — no combustion onsite and zero risk of fuel spills; cost efficient where off-peak electricity pricing applies.
  • Minimal oxidation — vertical cylindrical design reduces surface exposure to air, preserving quality of bitumen during storage.

Key Technical Features

  • Capacity range: 20 – 110 m³ (custom sizes available).
  • Tank geometry: Vertical cylindrical tanks with curved bottom— optimized to reduce bitumen-air contact and minimize oxidation. Open/closed to atmosphere types for PMB storage
  • Heating system: Main resistance (booster) heaters combined with base/sword resistances for uniform heating and fast recovery. Heating elements are thermostatic controlled automatically from the panel and sized per capacity and viscosity requirements.
  • Insulation: High-density rock-wool with foil to achieve low thermal conductivity and prevent thermal bridges. Insulation thicknesses are configurable
  • Control & automation: Central control panel with temperature PID control, automatic heater sequencing, level and temperature readouts, alarms and motor starters. Optional PLC and remote SCADA integration available.
  • Instrumentation & safety: Continuous level sensors (max & continuous), temperature meter(s), high-high level sensors, pressure relief valve, maintenance hatch(es) and over-temperature protection
  • Construction materials: Carbon steel shell (internal surface can be supplied with protective coating on request), welded to industry best practice. Surface treatments and coatings available for extended service life.

Typical Applications

  • Bitumen storage for asphalt plants and road construction projects
  • Emulsion storage
  • Polymer-modified bitumen (PMB) storage and dosing
  • Temporary or permanent terminal storage where fuel-free heating is preferred
  • Facilities requiring low-emission heating solutions or operation during electricity off-peak windows

Control Panel

  • Temperature setpoint and display (digital)
  • Automatic heater activation (PID control) with staged heating to avoid inrush currents
  • Level monitoring: minimum, continuous, maximum and high-high-level alarm
  • Local alarms for over-temperature and low level
  • Manual/Auto selector and emergency stop
  • Optional: PLC logic, HMI touchscreen, remote monitoring via Modbus/TCP or other protocols

Safety & Standards

  • Bursting discs
  • Pressure and vacuum valves
  • Designed and manufactured following recognized international standards (EN, API, or local equivalents)
  • Comprehensive documentation — including welding logs, NDT reports, and safety calculations — can be provided on request.
  • Static and ventilation calculations
